A Horse in Need of a Second Chance

Emma doesn’t exactly have an easy time at school. Bullied by her classmates, she finds an unexpected sense of purpose when community service brings her to a horse rescue.

There, she meets Chance, an abused horse who has already endured more than most. When Emma learns that Chance and other horses could be sold at an auction that ends with horses being sent to a horse-meat factory, she decides she can’t simply walk away.

What starts as a connection between a lonely teenager and a horse in need becomes a mission to protect Chance—and the other horses who need someone to stand up for them.

Inspired by a Real Horse Rescue

Emma’s Chance is inspired by California’s Red Bucket Equine Rescue, a real organization dedicated to rescuing horses and giving them another chance at life.

That connection to real-world rescue work is one of the film’s most meaningful details. The story doesn’t just use horse rescue as a backdrop. It reflects the work of people who spend their time caring for vulnerable animals and giving them the opportunity to recover.

Even the horses on screen have a real connection to that mission. According to Red Bucket Equine Rescue, the majority of the horses featured in the movie were real rescue horses.

The horse playing Chance was actually portrayed by four different rescue horses, while real-life volunteers from Red Bucket also appeared as extras.

Emma Finds Something Worth Fighting For

Emma’s relationship with Chance gives her something she hasn’t had much of at school: a place where she feels like she belongs.

As she becomes more invested in the rescue, she also finds the courage to take action. Her plan to put the predatory horse-buyer out of business might be ambitious, but Emma is determined to protect the animals she has come to care about.
