Where to Watch THE VON TRAPP FAMILY: A LIFE OF MUSIC
You may know the songs. You may know the musical. But how well do you know the family behind the story?
The von Trapp Family: A Life of Music offers a closer look at the real-life von Trapp family through the eyes of Agathe von Trapp, the eldest daughter. Based on her memoir Memories Before and After the Sound of Music, this historical drama explores the family’s journey through love, loss, war, and extraordinary change—with music at the heart of it all.

The Story Behind the Classic Film
For many people, the von Trapp family is inseparable from the beloved songs and story made famous onstage and screen. But the real family lived a much more complicated and remarkable life.
Told from Agathe’s perspective, The von Trapp Family: A Life of Music steps beyond the familiar musical to explore the experiences that shaped the family before and after they became famous. As political tensions rise and war encroaches on their home, Agathe watches her family and community change around her.
What follows is a journey filled with unexpected turns, difficult choices, moments of joy, and heartbreaking loss.
When Music Becomes a Lifeline
Music is more than a backdrop to the von Trapp family’s story. It becomes a source of connection and comfort as the world around them grows increasingly uncertain.
Even in the darkest moments, the family continues to find reasons to sing. Their music helps preserve a sense of home and family when so much else is changing.
That perspective gives the story an emotional depth that goes beyond the famous musical. One Angel Guild member called the film a “very interesting historical perspective” on the classic story, while another praised the opportunity to learn more about the real von Trapp family.
A Story Told From the Heart of the Family
One of the film’s most compelling elements is its perspective. Rather than simply retelling the story audiences may already know, the movie draws from Agathe von Trapp’s own memories.
That personal perspective brings the family’s experiences to life in a way that feels intimate and deeply human. Viewers see not only the historical events surrounding the family, but also the relationships, disappointments, adventures, and moments of resilience that shaped their lives.
The result is a story about much more than a famous musical family. It’s about what happens when ordinary people find themselves caught in extraordinary circumstances—and how family, faith, courage, and music can help carry them through.
