She’s Not Just Spelling Words. She’s Spelling Out Her Future.
Akeelah has a gift for words, but talent alone doesn’t make the journey easy.
After entering a local spelling contest, she catches the attention of Dr. Larabee, a forthright and mysterious teacher. With his guidance, Akeelah begins preparing for bigger competitions and discovering just how far her abilities might take her.
Her journey eventually leads from South Los Angeles to the National Spelling Bee, where she faces some of the best young spellers in the country.
Suddenly, a simple spelling contest has become something much bigger.
More Than a Competition Movie
The spelling bee gives the story its competition and suspense, but Akeelah and the Bee is ultimately about perseverance, confidence, and discovering what you’re capable of.
Akeelah faces doubts from others and from herself as the stakes get higher. She has to learn how to push through challenges, accept help, and take her own abilities seriously.
The result is a story that can inspire viewers of all ages. One Angel Guild member called it “an awesome, refreshing movie about what you can do if you put your mind to it, no matter what your age,” while another praised its message of “perseverance, determination, and love.”
A Feel-Good Family Classic
With Keke Palmer in the lead role alongside Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne, Akeelah and the Bee brings heart and humor to a story about a young girl finding her confidence.
It’s also the kind of movie that can mean something different depending on when you watch it. For younger viewers, Akeelah can be an inspiring example of what happens when you believe in your abilities. For adults, her story is a reminder of how much encouragement can shape a young person’s future.
