Where to Watch SPARE PARTS

by Angel | October 29, 2026

What can four high school students accomplish with less than $1,000, a pile of scavenged parts, and a teacher who believes in them?

Quite a lot.

Based on a true story, Spare Parts follows four Mexican-American students from an underfunded Phoenix high school who take on an ambitious engineering challenge: building an underwater robot for a national competition.

Their competitors have better equipment, bigger budgets, and plenty of reasons to expect an easy win. The students have creativity, determination, and a willingness to figure things out as they go.

A $1,000 Robot vs. the Best in the Country

The odds aren’t exactly in their favor.

The four students have less than $1,000 to work with, while some of the teams they’ll face have thousands of dollars behind them. Instead of letting the difference in resources stop them, they get creative, using scavenged and inexpensive parts to build their underwater robot.

What starts as an after-school project quickly becomes a serious competition.

With the national championship approaching, the students have to solve engineering problems, learn to work together, and figure out how to turn limited resources into something that can actually compete.

The Teacher Who Sees Their Potential

Helping the students along the way is their teacher, played by George Lopez.

He doesn’t simply hand them the answers. He helps them recognize what they’re capable of and gives them room to figure out how to get there. That relationship becomes an important part of the story. The students aren’t just building a robot—they’re discovering abilities they may not have realized they possessed.

As one Angel Guild member put it, the film shows “great creativity and determination matched with a teacher willing to see the great potential in these students.”

More Than a Robotics Competition

At its heart, Spare Parts is about four students realizing that their circumstances don’t have to determine their potential.

Their journey touches on family, education, opportunity, and the assumptions people can make about where talent comes from. The film shows what can happen when young people are given the chance to build, compete, fail, learn, and try again.

And because the story is based on real events, the accomplishments feel all the more remarkable.

A True Story About What’s Possible

The students in Spare Parts don’t have everything they need when they start building their robot. But they have enough to begin.

What follows is a funny, inspiring story about ingenuity, teamwork, perseverance, and refusing to let expectations decide what you can accomplish.

Sometimes the biggest advantage isn’t having more.

It’s knowing how to make something great with what you have.

Watch Spare Parts now on Angel and discover the true story of four students who dared to compete against the odds.
